Early Intervention on Wheels

Through Early Intervention on Wheels, UCT provides Early Intervention and Community Based Rehabilitation of Persons with Disabilities affected with severe disabilities in Dindigul and in the inclusion of persons with disabilities in community development programs. Activities of the EIC on wheels is

  • Early intervention (EI) at doorsteps – i.e., home-based services occur in “natural environments”.

  • Use of Tele calling, Voice /text message facilities

  • Starting of EICs at the Cluster level.

  • Mainstreaming / Inclusion of the beneficiaries in nearby schools after the preparation training.

  • Support to prevent loneliness and isolation.

  • Provision of access to health services.

  • Convergence with government and stakeholders and insurance schemes.



Areas of involvement

At Early Intervention on Wheels, the Therapist observes the child in the classroom and while at play. The Therapist also interviews the parents and teachers before making an assessment and then recommends a plan of action that best suits the child. Some areas of involvement are:

  • Balance and posture

  • Muscle tone and strength

  • Body awareness

  • Fine motor abilities (pinching and grasping, manipulative skills, pencil and scissors use, handwriting)

  • Gross motor abilities (running, jumping, climbing)

  • Motor Planning (ability to plan, initiate, and execute a motor act)

  • Visual Perception (Shape recognition, Visual Memory)

  • Visual Motor Integration (Copying shapes, copying block designs)

  • Sensory Integration (Response to sensory stimuli, discrimination of sensory input)

  • Behavior modification (arousal level, attention, problem-solving skills)

  • Self-care skills (eating, dressing, toilet habits, bathing)

  • Community living skills (Management of money, shopping)

  • Pre-academic skills (identify letters, sounds, shapes, colors and numbers)

  • Play skills are used as a tool to enhance life skills

  • Social skills

  • Pre-vocational and vocational skills



Sensory activities include

  • Textured mats

  • Bean bags

  • Rope ladder

  • Smell, taste, touch, and feel activities

  • Joint compression and Therapy ball.



Speech Therapy

One-on-one speech therapy sessions are available for children enrolled as well as those not enrolled in our school programs. Therapy sessions focus on developing a child’s overall communication skills and an individualised plan will be devised to address your child’s needs. They focus on preverbal, receptive, and expressive language, social communication, articulation, and phonology the following therapies—also called “allied health services”—address symptoms commonly associated with autism, but not specific to the disorder.
